One of the first things to understand about tinnitus is that it is a symptom and not a disease. When people are troubled by this symptom they often have a fear that it will lead to deafness (extremely unlikely); that it could be because of a tumour (possible but rare); or that they do not know what it is caused by, and this unknown increases the anxiety and fear about it.
Believe it or not everyone hears tinnitus sometimes, but it simply does not often register in our conscious awareness after it is present for a while.
Once a medical doctor has ruled out a tumour or infection or other treatable problem, which is the case 99% of the time, it is time to use hypnosis because the answer lies in managing stress, fear and anxiety.
The use of hypnosis reduces the emotional disturbance and activation of fight & flight associated to the tinnitus. We then encourage the natural process of habituation to occur. When you consider that hypnosis is a wonderful tool for desensitization and retraining associated reactions, you can begin to see the powerful ability that hypnosis has to help people deal with tinnitus.
